In order to cope with the increasing needs for the safety of tourists and visitors to the major lakes, the Coast Guard Headquarters set up:
the 1st Garda Lake Naval Unit in Salò, reporting to Venice Harbour Master's Office
the 2nd Maggiore Lake Naval Unit in Verbania, reporting to Genoa Harbour Master's Office
Ships and trained personnel of these Units control the above mentioned lakes during the summer season, in the same way as they do along the 8.000 km. Italian coastline, so as to ensure the safety of swimmers and pleasure boat owners who enjoy the waters of the main Italian lakes.
